OC My Potato!
OC My Potato!
Hello readers of Tom!,
I'm eager to tap into the full capabilities of my desktop PC. I'm considering boosting my RAM and CPU through overclocking, hoping for a slight improvement in moderate gaming performance. I want to see if this is feasible within the limits of my motherboard's BIOS. Besides that, any suggestions on other ways to enhance performance would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I'm also open to recommendations for graphics cards that could work with my current configuration.
I've heard that overclocking my existing GPU isn't very effective, so I'll skip that route. Updating the BIOS is another option, though I'm unsure how to do it safely—especially since I need to back up the current version on a flash drive. The process seems to require a CD, but I'm not sure if the BIOS will recognize a flash drive at the flash screen. I might start a separate thread about this later.
Regarding overclocking RAM, I think it's worth exploring, but I want to be informed first. According to some sources, modifying OC settings for memory can affect its lifespan. I'd like to confirm this before making any changes.
Here are my specifications:
- Intel M61PMV motherboard
- BIOS version P05
- Nvidia GeForce 6100 (or possibly 6150?) with NForce 400-430
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core @ 2.7GHz (Brisbane AM2 CPU)
- Two 2GB Kingston DDR2 PC2-6400 at 800Mhz each
- CPU-Z indicates RAM timings and voltage are set correctly, but serial numbers differ—this might matter for OC
- Nvidia GeForce 9400GT DDR2 128-bit DX10 (1GB dedicated PCIe x16 GPU)
- Windows 7 64-bit operating system
My motherboard's BIOS offers some useful tweaks. I've discovered pages with settings for RAM, CPU, and GPU, though the options for CPU and GPU are quite limited. I'll keep track of any adjustments and share more details if needed.
I have access to CPU-Z, PCI-Z, GPU-Z, and HWiNFO tools.
P.S. My PC has been having sleep problems since it arrived last year. I finally resolved it using BIOS USB wake settings last night! The issue is that I can't be woken with keyboard or mouse input if the setting is disabled—though it does sleep. Yay!
No one can give you sound guidance here—it’s better to focus on what matters. The items available are mostly museum pieces, and altering them might lead to losing your PC entirely, which isn’t worth it since you won’t gain any real advantage.
The motherboard is not well-known, and the PSU seems similar. Attempting to speed things up without proper information could damage your PC permanently.
The safest option is to keep things as they are, as risking too much without any payoff isn’t wise.

Current setup: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ with 2.7GHz Brisbane AM2, 2x 2GB Kingston DDR2 PC2-6400 at 800Mhz, and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 9400GT DDR2 128-bit DX10 1GB GPU.
It doesn’t seem worth it; you’ll likely just get better performance anyway.

Urbancamper wants to enhance his system by increasing RAM and CPU speeds, hoping for a small improvement in moderate gaming performance. He shares his current hardware details and expresses skepticism about the benefits, suggesting he might already be performing well. He also asks about potential gains from upgrading and mentions his interest in BIOS settings and overclocking guides.
