OC AMD athlon x4 860k paired with cryorig h5
i have no prior experience or knowledge about oc'ing, but i want to improve my performance in games with my current setup. i mainly play dota 2 and currently get between 45-55 fps. i’m hoping to achieve an additional 10-20 fps through overclocking. my pc specs are:
cpu: amd athlon x4 860k
gpu: zotac gtx 750ti 2gb
mb: msi a78m-e35 v2 (will be replaced with asrock fm2a58m-vg3+)
hsf: cryorig h5
psu: seasonic p460fl 460w platinum
ram: 2x4gb corsair 1600
current temperatures are around 65°c when idle or browsing, and 80-90°c during gaming.
can you suggest a stable overclocking target for the 860k? i’m not sure if that’s the right term, but i’d appreciate any advice.
i’m open to suggestions and would value your feedback!
Initially those temperatures are significantly too high, particularly at higher clock speeds. It's very probable you could achieve better performance simply by lowering the temperature. Don't worry about overclocking atm and concentrate on managing heat. Lastly, if you swap that motherboard, you'll likely need a new Windows license.
what exactly is going on? i thought amd was hotter than intel, so i assumed the temperature was okay. how can i bring it down? at first, with the stock cooler, my cpu was around 100°C during games, but after installing h5, it dropped to -20°C. i’m not sure how to lower this temperature. also, a new mobo = new brand? i didn’t realize that. thanks for sharing something useful today!
AMD chips manufactured on the 28nm process must never operate above 61°C. It's likely your CPU is throttling and performance is dropping. I suggest using AMD overdrive, which provides a comprehensive overclocking and monitoring system from AMD. This will help you identify any problems.
Already has AMD overdrive installed and the maximum temperature appears to be about 120°C, with a thermal margin of around 45°C to 55°C during idle time.
