I recently changed from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro and everything functioned well. A few days back I needed to return my motherboard for hardware issues and switched parts temporarily. This made my Windows 10 setup inactive and forced a reactivation. I tried using the old Windows 8.1 product key, ProduKey to locate the Windows 10 key, but neither worked. So I contacted support with my install ID and was told I’d have to reinstall Windows 8.1 and then upgrade again. That didn’t help because I’d rather avoid a clean install. Since I bought a retail version, I’m confident I’m compliant with the licensing terms. It looks like getting a crack for Windows 10 might be my only choice if I can’t activate it properly.

Contact MS support via phone and explain the issue with your motherboard. They will assist in reactivating it.
I thought I had everything ready, but they said I needed to reinstall the older Windows version. Would it be better to call again for another opinion?
During the reinstall process on older Windows 8, if you try to update it, it won't work because the Windows 10 upgrade has already registered your Windows 8 key with your hardware ID. It's recommended to contact them for assistance. Also, keep following your guidelines.
