Observing unusual temperatures during gaming on a Ryzen 7800X3D motherboard
Hello everyone, I’ve been experiencing some unusual problems lately that are getting more frustrating. To give you a clearer picture, I’ve been playing Phantasy Star Online New Genesis. Every time I start the game, the CPU temperature jumps instantly to 84-86°C for a short period before entering the main menu. During playtime, it spikes to 60-62°C with ultra settings. At first, I assumed it was just the game loading. Last Wednesday, after routine maintenance, the temps rose to 88-89°C and sometimes reached 90°C while playing. Even after shutting down the previous night’s game, the temperatures stayed high (70-72°C). The fans are also spinning louder now than before. Although it sounds normal for gaming with an air cooler and warm weather, I’ve been monitoring temperatures using hwmonitor and msi afterburner throughout. This sudden change is really concerning. Before this issue, my CPU tests with stress tools like cpu-z, 3D Mark, and Cinebench showed no readings above 84°C. After those tests, the situation remained unchanged. I replaced the cooler and checked game forums and Discord, but found no reports of similar problems. It’s starting to worry me, and I’m running out of ideas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
CPU model is Ryzen 7 7800x3d, GPU uses Gigabyte 4070 Super Gaming, power supply is MSI MPG A850GF 850W, RAM is G.Skill Ripjaws 32GB DDR5 at 6000Mhz, motherboard is Gigabyte B650M Gaming X, case type is NZXT S340 Elite. Fans include two Artic 140mm intakes, one Artic 120mm top exhaust and one Artic 120mm back exhaust. Cooler is Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120SE. I don’t have photos of the interior yet; I’ll share them once I’m back home. I also have fan curves and a -30 setting in all cores optimized.
These specifications are quite impressive; I was expecting less. You have ample cooling capacity if used properly—possibly the situation. I suggest using Fan Control, as it offers full flexibility (though I’m unsure if your Gigabyte firmware supports it well). For instance, my case fans monitor CPU, GPU, or HDD temperatures (which is unusual), depending on their respective ranges. Edited May 25, 2024 by leclod
Temperature readings by themselves don't tell the whole story. You must consider both temperature and load together to understand what's happening. Still, those fan curves seem overly strict and not quite right. My 7800x3D is air-cooled, and my entire case (eight fans including two on the CPU) relies on one fan header. It stays at a fixed 40% PWM until the CPU reaches 85°C, then slowly increases to a maximum of 60% PWM. I rarely see temperatures hit 85°C except during heavy loads like rendering or shader compilation. Most of the time, I can't even hear my system, even with a standard air-cooled 4090. It looks like your problem stems from not knowing how these chips manage heat and setting fan curves poorly. A bit of adjustment should make it quieter.
