Observing heat changes in the Ryzen 3 during gameplay
Hi, I'm working with a Ryzen 3 3100 CPU and a stock cooler. My idle temperature is about 50°C. In the BIOS I set current low idle and PBO off to maintain low temps. While playing Assassin's Creed Origins, the CPU temperature swings wildly from 62 to over 75°C, hitting around 75 and then dropping again—especially during intense AAA games. It doesn't occur with Apex Legends or Fortnite. Anyone have advice on how to fix this? My motherboard is an MSI B450 Tomahawk, the GPU is an ASUS GTX 750, and I'm using a Corsair CX550 PSU.
It's not that high, but I'm concerned about maintaining a CPU lifespan. Is this related to my custom smart fan settings? I've adjusted the fan speed based on temperatures.
75 degrees is acceptable. I'd be more concerned about temperatures in the high 80s or above.
It should happen once summer begins. Right now it's around 32°C locally. During the heat of summer it'll reach about 45°C.
At 80 degrees it won’t cause damage but it will definitely reduce the lifespan if you keep pushing around 80°C, right? One point that confuses me is why the temperatures shouldn’t be so high for this Ryzen 3100. I’ve read many benchmarks and reviews, and they usually didn’t go above 70°C. I’d be happy with my current temps if I had a Ryzen 3600 or better.
If you're worried, I'd consider swapping out the stock cooler. Temperatures around 75 or 80 degrees won't harm the CPU as much as you think. They have protections in place (thermal throttling) to prevent damage. Many Intel laptops are built to run at 100 degrees, which is why they can handle it safely.
