Hi all, I'm struggling to understand what's happening with my NVMe drive (XPG S40G) on my Strix B450-F motherboard. It's running about three times slower for reads and twice as slow for writes after the fresh Windows installation. After a clean install of Windows, only CrystalDiskMark showed normal performance—3200MB/1200MB. Once I updated Windows and added the required drivers (motherboard and graphics), things improved to 1200MB/490MB. The write speed is even worse than some SSDs. This is really frustrating. Do any of you have similar issues with different brands of NVMe drives? Could it be related to the motherboard chipset drivers or the Windows updates? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Zeph, I placed it in the gap between the CPU and GPU (see attached photo). It should be marked M.2_1 on the motherboard manual, which will turn off the SATA5_6 port and let the NVMe operate at full speed via PCIe x4. I didn’t swap the slot after the initial installation (first test, normal operation) and after everything was set up (second test, encountered issue). Thanks.

That's correct. I just reviewed the manual on the ASUS website, and now I'm checking the specifications sheet for the SSD.

The details on the motherboard and NVMe SSD seem fine, but I’m puzzled about why it feels off. It’s likely because performance drops when more storage is used, which might be frustrating.

It's quite puzzling since I opened Task Manager and saw the drive activity drop to a single digit before restarting the test to prevent background processes. Still, the same outcome occurred. What surprised me most was that after a fresh installation, the problem appeared later. I thought it might be related to the Windows update because it installed many PCI drivers (see attached picture), but I have no idea what they do.

You mentioned not putting anything in the 5.6 slot and placed the rest in 1.2.3. For PCIe, you set it to GEN3 in the BIOS. It still didn’t work.

Check the bios, advanced menu, and onboard device settings to confirm they are correctly configured.
