Hello! I just bought two 2.0 m.2 drives from the same maker, both matching the exact specs. They’re plugged into an old B360 board—one for booting and one for storage. I plan to upgrade to a B550 board with dual M.2 slots. I need to place the boot drive in the correct slot. Is there a way to tell which is the boot drive using data from the system, like a serial number, before installing?
Unfortunately, that's the problem, I don't know which is the boot drive. When I installed the 2 new drives they were just for storage. I then changed one to a boot drive and got a fresh install of Windows. I do not want to work the problem out by removing one drive and then seeing what happens if I don't have to
Check the serial number on the boot disk using a crystal disk viewer. It should display the same info as printed on the drive. The boot device can be placed in any slot, and speed differences are negligible.
Accessing the UEFI boot menu lets you identify your system. You can also generate a live USB from sources like https://gparted.org/. Within GParted, the top-right menu offers a selection option. Choose the relevant drive and you’ll see partitions matching your setup. Deleting a drive and refreshing will confirm its removal.
When you eliminate one and lack Windows, you can tell which version is present.
