I’m totally on the side of "ME and Vista really messed things up," and I’ll stay that way forever. My old laptop is a 98 model—there aren’t even working drivers for anything beyond that—I still feel it’s way better than anything else. It runs faster and was more stable when I played older games before switching to fully modern systems.
I actually use ME on my Win9X system because it supports USB mass storage and offers better performance than 98SE, plus it runs smoothly with just 1GB of RAM. Looking around, I don’t find any recent complaints about WinME being problematic—it’s more like a legendary issue, but anyone who tries it on an old machine hasn’t encountered major problems. The lack of a true DOS mode isn’t surprising either; if you’re after a DOS-focused setup, ME isn’t the best fit.
