Looks like multiple gigabyte boards and possibly ASUS models have released updated BIOS versions with AMD Agesa 1.2.0.5 or newer. The removal of the "max boost clock override" feature significantly restricts PBO performance during lighter workloads. Some users suggested this issue might be connected to a ROM Size limitation, possibly related to the PBO EDC 0 bug.
I tried the newest beta BIOS on my board briefly. It performed well, offering strong gains and a max boost override. However, the layout was different, and most of the time the vcore stayed around 1.425 with a top limit near 1.45. The boost feature was restricted to just a few cores or threads. Overall, it wasn’t great. Comparing it to my previous setup, where vcore reached 1.535 and boosted consistently, I’d recommend the updated BIOS for those struggling with CPU cooling.
It seems aimed at adjusting the 70C light load temperatures on certain 5800X setups using the same power as a 5950, but with less die area for cooling. A value of 1.535 indicates a significant increase in Vcore, which may not be needed unless your sample can exceed 4.8GHz. Someone else mentioned that GAGABlow provided a beta BIOS with an offset added to the max boost clock. I’d like to see options to manually set the maximum PBO voltage and combine it with offset mode for better tuning of PBO behavior, plus controls for PBO states at lower loads.
The area around 1.5 raises my worries about short-term performance if the load is lightly threaded with low current (under 70A). It seems fine at lower loads, but pushing to 80-90A above 80°C would really test its limits.
I wouldn't do that at all. I've been monitoring my CPU for a year now. It's stable, not as sensitive to issues as some believe. However, I wouldn't configure 1.5v in BIOS for an all-core OC setup. 80-90A is manageable unless cooling becomes a problem. I often see higher readings—140-180A and even PPT over 200W.
Sure, it seems you're talking about a 5950x configuration, which works well for that chip. A 5600/5800x setup offers significant performance gains.
I own a 5900X and a 5600X. In previous AGESA updates, the 5600X seemed to perform consistently, though I suspect the BIOS now caps it around 1.45. That has been true since last summer. I’d need to plug it in and check, but I’m back home after a few days and won’t be able to do that today.
It won't require much effort. You need to really force PBO to achieve 130W PPT. The highest I've seen it reach was 153W PPT while running Linpack with a manual all-core clock of 4700MHz. That session caused it to overheat.
