I was trying to swap out the thermal paste on my CPU/GPU and got a little confused. While disconnecting the battery from the MOBO, it slipped and lightly touched the board. I noticed a blue/white spark and thought something was wrong. I checked for burn marks but didn’t see any. After reassembling everything and restarting, the laptop booted up fine. When I disassembled it again, I reapplied the thermal paste and ran a full BIOSHOCK Infinite benchmark. Everything looks normal so far. Still wondering if I missed something that might cause issues later. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

ESD would immediately damage the board if everything functions properly, so take comfort in the good news and proceed with caution; otherwise, consider replacing it. Laptops are generally sturdy enough to withstand minor ESD from the battery, though the outcome depends on what came into contact.

It really depends on what you interacted with, affecting how much damage occurred. There could be no impact at all, or a USB port might stop functioning. You're currently in good condition, but if you notice random errors or strange messages in your event log, you'll know what's wrong. Depending on the laptop's value, it might be worth bringing it to a repair shop if issues arise. ESD isn't a fix, but repairs are possible. Just avoid scam shops that only sell parts.

I suspect a short circuit occurred with a capacitor. Inspect all capacitors carefully for signs of harm, like a rounded or domed casing instead of the intended flat shape.

Evaluate the condition; verify caps, resistors, VRMs, etc. If everything is intact, issues should not arise (unless the battery was affected instead)

If it starts up afterward, everything should be okay. Once the enchanted mist is released, you'll see the confirmation.

If it's working and you have the means to do so then now is a good time to make a full backup/image.

I triggered several modules, but everything worked well. If it starts now, the over current/over voltage protection performed correctly and everything is okay.

I did the same when I installed my latest PC at Bananasplit_00. Everything stayed fine and I even pushed the limits on both the CPU and GPU. Don’t worry about it. @sharperfury

Turn off all devices and connect them to a ground for safety.
