Today I acquired another G Skill Aegis 3200mhz kit with 16GB RAM (two 8GB sticks) to pair with my existing 16GB of 3200mhz G Skill Trident Z RGB. My current setup has 16 gigabytes total, but it’s not performing as expected. Here are my specs: CPU – I5 10400f, Motherboard – Asus Prime H470M Plus (budget model), GPU – RTX 3060, RAM – 16GB DDR4 at 2666mhz. After installing the new RAM, it should have worked perfectly with 32 gigabytes total. However, I encountered issues.

Upon installation, I waited an hour without posting. Then I powered down the system, removed the original Trident kit, and installed the Aegis. It booted immediately and accepted posts and loads into Windows without any problems. I swapped the Aegis in the unused slots and connected both kits, placing one stick in slot A1 and the other in B1. Even when trying four DIMM slots, the setup remained stable.

I disabled XMP settings, set RAM speed to 2000mhz at 1.20GHz, and reset the BIOS to defaults. The CMOS battery was removed for five minutes, but no improvement. Both kits share the same CL number: CL16-18-18-38. I’m stuck and would really appreciate any advice or help from someone more experienced.

Inspect the motherboard for bent pins, which often lead to memory channel problems. If none are present, it might indicate a faulty IMC for that specific memory channel.

All pins are straightforward, and the stream remains active on both platforms

Reason classic examples show mixing kits isn't recommended.

Both sets are identical in branding and likely use the same memory ICs. Are the slower clock speeds applied to all RAM? Make sure the voltage settings are accurate.

Yes, 1.20 volts is correct.

When secondary and third timing groups vary, they might not align in the same release. It's just how things are. This has always been the case. Why would it shift abruptly? Understand, I'm not saying it's intentional—just a difference between Prime and ROG boards. The Prime board could miss certain memory training elements. I'm not sure, but I'd suggest testing with memory from the same batch or close to similar build dates for different kits. Otherwise, diagnosing would be guesswork.

Unlikely to run at 3200mhz; likely closer to 1.35. Better indicate this on the stick or packaging. Could adjust to operate at 1.4 volts to stabilize the setup with less precise timing. Experiment with very relaxed settings, increase voltage then install the second unit. Results are likely worse than using the faster 16GB model.

Ensure your system meets BIOS Version 1602 or newer requirements.

Reset the CMOS first before attempting to run four sticks. Internal sub timings improve with two sticks instead of four.
