I use my Xiaomi 4A with Gigabit, it really suits me thanks to its affordable features. I tried OpenWrt for testing, but it caused performance issues and slightly slower connections. Apparently, there was a firewall configuration on the router when I first got it. Since I have the latest firmware, I’m not sure what else might be missing.

The firmware on that router uses OpenWRT, which explains why you could install it. Since you're experiencing issues with other routers, the problem likely stems from your configuration settings. The term "running hot" isn't a concern here because these devices have built-in temperature limits; if they exceeded them, they would have stopped operating immediately.

openwrt works on many different devices, including mobile ones. While a firewall option exists, I’m still unable to locate NAT settings or enter repeater mode, as I need to use custom DNS.

You're referring to the OpenWRTInvasion tool for flashing official builds. You're asking about enabling NAT in repeater mode.

I don't have the ability to operate a router in repeater mode due to this issue.
