Not Getting 144hz With KVM Switch
Not Getting 144hz With KVM Switch
I received my KVM switch this holiday season, but my 144Hz monitor only shows up to 60Hz when connected via the KVM. Here are my details: GPU – AMD Radeon RX 6600; Monitor – ASUS VG248; Switch – AV Access KVM; Amazon listing lists support for 1920x1080p at 120Hz. I can connect my monitor directly to the GPU with a DisplayPort cable and reach 144Hz. Is there a problem with using HDMI on the switch and DisplayPort on the monitor for that frequency? Do I need a converter that handles 144Hz? That’s confusing!
Are you connecting via an HDMI to Display port adapter or using a standard HDMI cable? If you're using a HDMI to DP cable or adapter, that's the issue. You must use only HDMI 2.0 or better cables from the computer to the switch and then to the monitor. HDMI to DP cables usually support only 60Hz refresh rates. As noted in the KVM Switches Amazon listing, for higher refresh rates you need HDMI 2.0 or newer cables.
Currently, the setup includes an HDMI cable linking your PC to the switch, followed by a HDMI to DisplayPort cable from the switch to your monitor. Checking the monitor's support page for the VG248QE model, it mentions compatibility with DisplayPort 2.0. Since your monitor only supports 144Hz via DisplayPort, using a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable should work fine.
It means you might get more than the listed refresh rate with a high-quality HDMI cable, but the monitor’s specifications cap it at 76Hz.
You mentioned the KVM Switch can handle up to 120Hz at 1080p with a HDMI 2.0 cable. If your monitor only supports 76Hz over HDMI, that should cover most of your concerns. With limited HDMI support and adapters capping performance at 60Hz, it won't meet higher refresh rate needs. You'll need a KVM switch using Display Port instead of HDMI.
