Perhaps it's because many games today aim to be more serious? Consider something you can enjoy like Serious Sam HD. (No joke, that game always lifts my mood when I lose interest in other games because it doesn't take itself too seriously.) I don't suggest Serious Sam 3 or 2 for this purpose.
Gaming has evolved beyond the list you shared. Those old-school shooters are now replaced by Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset, both developed by independent creators. You might also want to explore Rise of the Triad—it stays true to its roots. For real-time strategy, things are a bit sparse right now; the main contenders are SC2 with upcoming titles like Shipbreakers and Grey Goo, though options are limited. Meanwhile, tactical RPGs are making a strong return with titles such as Divinity: Original Sin and Wasteland 2, offering some much-needed excitement.
Explore various styles, master them, who knows—perhaps it turns into a great pastime for you. Or simply step away from gaming for a while. I face a comparable issue; I still enjoy playing, it eases everyday stress, yet it no longer brings the same joy. It might be linked to personal growth, so maybe I need a partner *sigh*.
I believe games have become so intense and serious these days that it's tough to regain my enthusiasm. I haven't played for quite some time since getting married and having a daughter. Now she's older, so I think games could help me escape the constant noise and pressure. Indie titles might work but don't really appeal to me compared to classic games. Still, maybe *Shovel Knight* could be a start? Probably won't last long though. Right now I'm stuck with *Skyrim* because I have no other options, but I definitely prefer *Morrowind*.
