I want to run a local game on another PC. I've enabled file sharing via Ethernet. However, when trying to open the shared folder, I receive an error about missing permissions. I've configured all permission settings correctly.

It seems your message is unclear. Could you explain what you're referring to? Are you asking about setup details, permissions, or something else? Let me know how I can assist.

I assigned an IP address to both PCs for file sharing. Then I enabled advanced file sharing settings through the control panel, turning off password protection and adjusting encryption options on both devices. On the sender PC, I configured sharing for the game folder, granted full access, changed the owner to everyone, but still couldn’t connect.

All participants are anonymous. Each user is counted individually—I haven’t checked the man page for smbd recently.

The issue remains unclear. If file sharing was established, please share your experience.

That was his response… you need to ensure proper permissions are granted. I used “everyone” before, which functioned. This was a long time ago; now you must enter each name individually in the advanced sharing settings. It’s been so far away I’m unsure where to find it. Once configured correctly, everything should work again. It seems something is definitely misset. What does this indicate? Both computers should already receive an IP address automatically from the router via DHCP… Are you attempting to create a direct point-to-point connection using just one Ethernet cable between them? If yes, why not rely on the network for data transfer?

You may create a new account or ask the other device to use given login details to connect via SMB. If no details are provided, the remote system tries its own credentials, which you can replace with a matching username and password from the remote user. There are multiple approaches, but if you don’t set credentials or allow the remote machine’s access, permission problems will arise. Additionally, there are defined sharing rules about whether the intranet is public or private, including advanced settings that apply across platforms.

I understand you prefer straightforward explanations over complex language. I’ll break it down in simple terms so you can easily grasp what you can do to improve.

Permissions weren't configured correctly as discussed earlier. SMB takes the credentials by default unless you define otherwise or enable the assumed ones. You should ask the connected device to provide its own credentials or let the system use the default owner/password. This means if your local login (Owner/Password1!) is used, it will attempt to authenticate the remote machine with those same credentials. Either configure identical local credentials on the target host or let it authenticate using the credentials you entered on the original machine.

How do I set up the credentials I've never done this before? I'm not sure how to proceed.
