Not compatible with T7500 modelW3680 not suitable for this unit
I just wanted to share some details for anyone else with a Dell t7500 who’s considering an upgrade. I did some research beforehand and found the W3680 to be a solid option compared to my X5676, especially since it unlocks multipliers. However, today I installed it and discovered it isn’t compatible with my t7500. That was quite a surprise! Still, I hope this information helps someone else.
Consider adding the previous CPU and refreshing the BIOS? https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/...00/drivers
Good suggestion but I managed to find a thread talking all about this and that it did not help. It's running A16, which should be fine, and I'd rather not mess with the bios. Very weird that the t3500 and 5500 are compatable but not the 7500.
It's actually quite typical for these kinds of stations. They're usually built for single-purpose tasks like basic data entry. You seem to have the top processor selection options already in place.
The 5690 is backed by Intel, but it doesn't justify the cost. I'll have to stay alert for another compatible CPU or motherboard for the w3680.
Why upgrade this outdated equipment? Cut your spending on old gear and invest in some modern, affordable options. You could get a Ryzen AThlon 220ge with Vega graphics, a budget-friendly AM4 motherboard, and some inexpensive DDR4 RAM—it would make a significant difference for you.
It varies based on your needs. I own two t7500s with dual CPUs, functioning as VM and NAS hosts supporting up to 20 VMs each. This Ryzen setup works well, but the older platform can't match that performance. I recently swapped one for a Threadripper 2950X with 128GB RAM I bought for $1k—it really outperforms everything. The new system also benefits from more PCIe lanes for HBA expansion.
I really like this setup and it's budget-friendly. It works smoothly with everything running at high settings, though my screen is only 1600x900. I'm starting to explore building PCs and I'm having fun finding good deals while getting solid machines at reasonable prices.
It's clear you're interested. I'm also familiar with older and retro components, and I appreciate using them occasionally.
The t7500 supports dual sockets. The W-series boards won’t work there, but the X-series will. This is similar to how i7 consumer models don’t fit dual sockets—X models generally function in single sockets as long as the 6-core i7 is available.
