Northbridge getting hot after five years with an MSI 970 Gaming motherboard am4+
Hi, I'm still using an MSI 970 Gaming board with the AM3+ socket. My AMD FX8350 CPU and ASUS GTX 1080Ti have been in this rig for a while, but recently I've noticed the northbridge getting very hot and my PC shutting down unexpectedly. I searched online but didn't find any specific solutions. It seems the MSI 970 Gaming board might have trouble with overheating northbridges, even though I've had it for years without issues. I tried adding a fan, placing it on top of the graphics card to improve airflow, and it seems to resolve the shutdowns I experienced before. Is this a recognized issue? Are others facing similar problems? Could not using an extra fan cause the board to fail? Will more people encounter the same problem?
It wasn't exactly 970, back then most premium units were really popular. X58 and 790FX are examples of that. Think it’s because the thermal paste on the heatsink dried out over time.
