Hello everyone,
I’m a beginner building my first PC and I chose the highest quality parts possible. I’m getting into software development, enjoy gaming, and plan to work on video/music editing and other tasks that demand strong computing performance.

Even though I turned on XMP, I’m still only seeing the standard 2400 Mhz from the box. I’ve tried turning it on and off in the BIOS several times, and I’ve updated the BIOS to the latest version from GIGABYTE. Still, I’m not reaching the 4800 Mhz I paid for.

Below is a summary of the main parts I used:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570S AERO G ATX AM4
Memory: XTREEM DDR4 DESKTOP MEMORY (4 x 8 GB)

Feel free to let me know what might be causing the problem! Thank you.

Please confirm your BIOS version for accuracy. Also, verify if the CPU-Z speeds indicate a 2400MHz DRAM frequency, which would equate to 4800MHz when doubled.

As for CPU-Z, it appears the opposite affect is happening (1200 MHz showing up in DRAM frequency, memory tab, times 2 = 2400 MHz). It seems Ryzen employs a configuration named DOCP rather than XMP. Check your BIOS for this setting. Note that some manufacturers, like Gigabyte, refer to it as EOCP.

There are a few points to clarify at the start. DDR4 operates at double data rate, meaning a transaction rate of 4800 is standard, but the actual clock speed is actually 2400Mhz. Many tools display the clock speed instead of the real transaction rate, so it's important to understand this first.

Secondly, reaching 4800 is a significant memory overclock. It will likely need some adjustments beyond just enabling XMP or DOCP. You'll probably have to adjust the synchronization settings and raise the manual DRAM voltage initially. This is especially true if your CPU's IMC can handle such high rates. All of this depends on whether your CPU can reliably maintain 4800Mtps data rates.

Many Ryzens seem to operate at 4800 MHz, but really it's just 2400 MHz, not because of the controller division ratios slowing things down, which happens above 3600 MHz—actually even lower like 1800 MHz.
