Hey everyone, I’m working on a few projects right now, and one of them involves setting up a custom number crunching system for personal use. I’m trying to get some Xeon E3-1270 v3 processors at a good price, but I’m still new to Xeon models and dual socket boards. I had a few questions:
1) Besides ensuring the processor fits its socket, do dual socket boards just work out of the box? Are there CPUs that can use more than one socket while others can’t?
2) Specifically about the E3-1270 v3, I’m worried the Intel page says it supports the FCLGA1150 socket and that the maximum CPU setup is one. Is the FCLGA1150 an original equipment manufacturer socket? Can I use it with a board that has an LGA1150 socket? Would that mean I can’t install this CPU in a dual socket board?

All Xeon E3 CPUs are designed for a single socket. Certain models fit standard consumer boards, though compatibility varies by board type. I’ve successfully used them on B85 and Q87 boards before.
Are you considering a dual CPU setup or prioritizing strong performance within a budget? Which tools handle the calculations? For instance, newer CPUs often outperform older ones, and memory plays a significant role—older E5 v1 or v2 systems may be affordable but lack modern AVX support if needed.
I'll be using y-cruncher. I'm mainly just getting the hang of it since I find it interesting. It seems to perform better on newer processors, but I'm not planning to spend a lot of money on it because it's just a personal project.

I’m not very familiar with dual-core setups, but for single socket systems it can handle a wide range of tasks and is affected by RAM speed. Depending on the task, you might need to consider RAM amounts or learn efficient disk usage as an alternative. Older E5 v1/v2 servers can be affordable and easily equipped with substantial ECC memory, though performance will likely be limited. They may run slower due to clock speeds and lack AVX2 support.
Consider the Dell 720 series. They employ e5 v2 processors and feature dual socket options.
