Its a tricky one, as if there is no visual damage and no smell then theres not really anything to go on. Presumably this was a pop when you pressed the power button, not when you toggled the PSU switch? If it was the HDD I'd expect there to be visual damage and it not work. Only thing I can think of is check everything carefully for visual damage and all the power connectors have no scorch marks (unplug them and check the ends) and are fully plugged in. A sudden surge during power on could have caused a spark if they aren't fully secure and you want to be sure they aren't going to overheat and melt if that is the case.
Did you verify the bios displayed the HD after starting with it connected and after the pop-up, but yes... make sure all cables and connectors are checked as recommended?
It's a pretty obscure PSU, so I'm not too confident about it. Their top-end platinum version got decent reviews, but when compared to the rest in that price range, it didn't stand out. The lower-end model for that price isn't worth hoping it's okay.
It seems the SATA cable failed during setup. A fragment was caught in the HDD port, likely causing a short.
