Hello, welcome to the world of PC building. I’m excited about my new setup, but I’m encountering an unexpected buzzing noise that appears without any clear cause. It lasts for a while and sometimes fades away. The sound seems to happen randomly—like when the computer powers on or I’m browsing the web. I suspect it might be coming from the power supply unit since it gets louder near it. Even after replacing another new PSU, the issue persists. I’ve attached a recording of the noise for reference.

My current build includes: Intel 12700F, MSI B660M-A Pro Corsair Vengeance RGB, 2x8GB colorful iGame 3070 OC, Samsung 980 Ti 1TB SSD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

It seems like coil whine is likely the issue, which isn't usually something you can easily resolve. As long as it functions properly, there should be no concerns.

850 units are sufficient for the system. If you correctly perceive the sound, it likely resembles typical computing background noise found in most computers. However, I should note that connecting external speakers can boost internal circuit noise in certain setups. If the speaker sounds align with what the power supply is doing, it may indicate a poor ground connection, contaminated power, or significant electromagnetic interference nearby. During many theater installations, we encountered this kind of noise through speakers when the environment had high EMF levels. Regardless of how much we grounded and cleaned the power, the receiver remained affected by background noise. Additionally, if your home uses LED lighting (such as bulbs in ceilings), it can generate dirty power that raises noise levels in circuits, potentially impacting other devices. This isn’t harmful to most products—only a small chance of damage.

Quiet computers are usually more affected by this. Generally, it’s a normal sign that parts are functioning properly. Coil Whine is common and rarely indicates a problem—just a small nuisance. Most makers consider it part of the design, so they might not bother fixing it if you try to return a power supply or graphics card. As long as your system runs smoothly without overheating or unusual smells, everything should be okay.
