I've been researching this and it looks like, regardless of the excuse I make—other than aesthetics—I find the Noctua NH-D15 and even the Cryo R1 to be superior choices compared to top-tier closed looped liquid coolers. For performance, low noise, and cost efficiency, it's a tough choice to go with an air cooler. Ultimately, all options are good at cooling, and some look better or cleaner. I was considering it for my i7 6700k, but it seems my H7 is more than enough. Anyone have thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

The Noctua D15 is expected to be quieter compared to most AiO coolers. But I should warn you about the memory clearance for RAM sticks with large heatsinks. There are also reports that heavy air coolers can warp the substrate of Skylake CPUs. You should check if the D15 has been flagged as a cooler to avoid.

I would choose noctua nh-d15/d14 or H100i GTX any time.
The decision really comes down to personal preference.
