Check your current specs and see if upgrading the CPU or switching to a higher-end one will boost performance. RAM speed won’t make a huge difference compared to a better GPU, but it can still help. For gaming, a noticeable jump in FPS often comes from a stronger processor or GPU rather than just more RAM.

Do you experience problems with your games? Is the processor working hard while the graphics stay calm? If so, upgrading the CPU could make a difference. Otherwise, you probably won't see a noticeable change.

I found this offer and I'm unsure if it's worth proceeding. The price is $700 for the full setup including CPU, motherboard, RAM, power supply, SSD, case, and cooling components. Once you connect a GPU, everything works perfectly. I kept using my previous build, but now I'm considering upgrading. It's tough to decide since my old system would still work fine.

A CPU might still act as a limitation even at 40% utilization. Relying solely on usage numbers isn't accurate. It's actually a good opportunity for improvement, and you'll notice better performance gains with a 7800X3D compared to the 5900X in demanding modern games. Whether it makes sense depends on your needs. If gaming is your main focus, it might be worth considering. Here are two images from Hardware Unboxed featuring an RTX 4090. It performs better than the 7900 XTX in terms of speed, though the 7900 XTX delivers strong overall performance. These shots are taken at 1080p to emphasize CPU strain. You can see the 7700X clearly outperforming the 5800X, particularly during low frame rates (stutter). Another 1080p average shows the 7800X3D maintaining an edge over the 7700X again. Keep in mind that peak frames aren't the only factor—watch the lows as well.

On 4K or higher resolutions, a 5700X3D would suffice. At 1080p, a 9800X3D is necessary.

I disagree: And: And if you don't want to install anything: Won't let you see the frametime graph, but you can pretty easily see what your CPU cores are doing vs GPU in X or Y game. Yes if you look at the overall core usage, it could be choking over a single core and so usage will look low while you're actually CPU bottlenecking... but just right click in Task Manager and tell it to "show logical processors"? Ain't hard, and you'll instantly see if one core is being hammered more than the others. Tis how I figured out that my CPU (an i3 12100) is what was choking in Space Marine 2, thus the 12600KF I have now. I don't think I've run into a game performance issue where I couldn't observe the issue with monitoring software. Here's a weird one, Fallout 76: Can clearly see that it loads 2 cores a lot more than the rest, and for some reason the CPU is not boosting (3700MHz and 2800Mhz are the P and E core base clocks, respectively), while frametimes are super stuttery. And the GPU's barely loaded, it's also not boosting and is only pulling 120W instead of the usual ~180W. If I played Fallout 76 much anymore I'd figure out why this is, but regardless it shows that you can easily see if your CPU or GPU are slammed or behaving abnormally.
