Sure, I see your point. Many are still sticking with PCIe Gen 2 right now. If I were you, I’d move to the RTX 3080 and when it’s time to replace it, upgrade the whole rig—maybe even something more powerful like a Ryzen 6000 or similar. The 3080, whether it’s a 3070 or 2070, is way too strong for 1080p gaming and will remain useful for a while longer.
I don't think my 2070 is that powerful for gaming, especially with ray tracing... I want to make sure I get the best from those upcoming titles (hello Cyberpunk with RTX) and I was really let down by Horizon Zero Dawn—either my GPU wasn't up to the task or the game isn't optimized. My girlfriend is getting a free 2070 next month, so... edit : I feel like the 3080 will definitely last me a long time, maybe even longer... that sounds like a powerful machine.
