I purchased a fresh Windows product key instead of performing a full installation on my HDD. Could I simply replace the key here? I’m curious if this would remove the OEM restrictions so I could move my hard drive to a new system. I checked online but didn’t find a definitive answer. Thanks!

Entering the product key unlocks that specific version of Windows with it. The fresh installation process mainly applies when you replace a hard drive, not when updating an existing system. I’m confused about why my original product key didn’t work and why the OEM key is only compatible with your motherboard.

Yes, an OEM-locked Windows copy typically requires a fresh installation to work properly on a new system.

I don’t understand what "OEM Locked" refers to, but I think it means the product can’t be moved to another motherboard. I haven’t heard of an OEM key for that. You might be able to figure it out. Give it a try! If you run into trouble, just re-enter your previous key and request a refund on the new one. There are various tools available to scan your computer for compatible product keys.

OEM locked means the key won't work on a different motherboard. You can disable it on your current PC and switch to another key to reactivate the same installation. The keys must match the same Windows version.
