A few weeks back I acquired a used Supermicro X9DRi-LN4F+ V1.20A with two 10-core CPUs and 32 GB of RAM—four 8GB sticks and eight 4GB sticks, both ECC registered. I’m not sure about the exact speeds, but I’m assuming DDR3 1333. Since I’m not home, I have several sticks of 4GB DDR3 with 8GB and 4GB DDR3 with 4GB. Can I mix them in my server? Would it cause any problems? I understand RAM might downclock to the lowest speed, but I’m uncertain about combining 4GB and 8GB sticks together. Also, I’m not sure if the RAM ranks matter—some servers use 2-rank 4-rank or 4-rank 8-rank configurations. Here’s the link to the motherboard I bought for reference.

Server requires ECC RAM; without it, it won’t function properly. Combining capacities helps, but it’s often less reliable than using dedicated ECC kits or modules.
