If it hasn't been turned on yet, that's fine. You could simply stick with Windows 10 for now.

I wouldn't suggest using a testing OS on your primary system without fully revealing it's a large keylogger designed to track searches and similar activities.

You may only use your friend's activation key when it isn't in use. It won't function on two computers simultaneously. The disk should work, you can set up Windows, but activation or updates require purchasing a copy.

In fact, it seems Microsoft took that feature offline. After updating to W8.1 recently, I couldn't start the installation without entering my key. The "next" button was hidden and there were no options to bypass it.

I think it varies by build/version. I've managed this with retail and technet releases, always letting me enter a key later. Earlier I thought it didn't work with an HP OEM disc I used some time ago.
