It doesn't really work like that. The RAM sticks says that it can do so if the motherboard and memory controller on the processor allow for it. However not all motherboards and processors are created equal. That is why there is a QVL for pretty much any consumer motherboard out there. What is listed in the QVL is validated by the motherboard manufacturer as working. In the QVL you will also find that some memory configurations are supported only in a single, dual or quad dim configuration. For example, a kit that may work perfectly in a single channel configuration, might not work in a dual channel config.
