most people don’t get their keys from scam resale sites (like Greg Salazar and ToastyBros). I use Win7 keys from my laptops and desktops around the house, which I no longer need. I’m thinking of giving my father a Ryzen 5 desktop since I won’t use it anymore. Right now I have a Win7 Pro key for Windows 10 Pro, but he doesn’t need Pro, so I just want him to get Windows 10 Home because I need Pro more. Can I unlink the key from the machine I’m using and use it on my new one that comes tomorrow?

Windows keys get registered with the motherboard at startup and confirmed by Microsoft servers.

I've successfully transferred keys between different M/Ds, so I'm confident it's achievable.

Using the Windows key linked to a Microsoft account allows access, but it remains tied.

You could name them another way if you prefer, or at least they were called before. I usually just leave them off during activation.

I'm not very confident about this since I haven't called in for a while. The mainboard needs its activation to be lost after the transfer.

It seems you're referring to the BIOS SLC section on Wikipedia. This topic is about the storage technology used in computer systems.

When the licence is RETAIL you may transfer it between computers as needed using an MS account linked to it. For OEM licences, this isn't possible. To verify: run cmd, type and run slmgr /dli, then check the window for RETAIL or OEM entries.

I’ve tried this on various older systems before, and it usually works fine for hardware I no longer plan to use with Windows. I can’t promise it will last forever, but Microsoft seems flexible as long as you have a valid key.

Both your primary and second desktop appear as retail options. I’m considering disconnecting my M$ account from the PC before wiping it, hoping this will resolve the issue. I intend to reinstall Windows 10 on my main machine using that Pro key later. A brief offline period seems necessary before reusing the key.
