I just installed Ubuntu Budgie to test it. When I ran the command to stop data collection in Ubuntu 18.04, it said the command wasn't found but could be installed with a specific package. I followed the guide at https://www.howtogeek.com/349844/how-to-...t-your-pc/ and used the command "ubuntu-report -f send no". I also removed the package "popularity-contest" using sudo apt remove, which worked. All commands were executed without quotes.

It seems you're referring to a specific version or feature of Ubuntu. Could you clarify what you mean by "part of the main Ubuntu distro"? This will help me provide a more accurate response.

The competition for showing popular installations was still active there.

A budgie user is not an ubuntu user so they likely dont want your data. The hardware data collected is nothing to worry about. I have advertised my hardware on steam's surveys and no one has broken into my house to steal my computer. I dont worry about ubuntu collecting my installation data because when I install anything or upgrade, my computer tells canonical's servers what I have installed anyway. There is no way around that unless you want to only upgrade through dvd or something convoluted.

I rely on Linux to stay private and avoid data tracking. It’s not something I’m comfortable with.
