Hello, the Asus ROG XG Mobile eGPU is coming soon, and it uses Thunderbolt 5 instead of their older connector. I’m planning a laptop upgrade next year and haven’t found clear details about whether Panther Lake models will work with it. Some sources suggest that only desktop Panther Lake CPUs are guaranteed to support Thunderbolt 5, while others mention that not all Arrow Lake mobile CPUs are compatible. It seems uncertain right now, but it might be too early to confirm.
We've already encountered Thunderbolt 5, but it's unclear why companies haven't adopted it yet—possibly due to cost or the complexity of advanced tech. This mobile model supports a 5090 GPU with up to 150 watts, and I think it would also work well on Thunderbolt 4.
I notice it should work with Thunderbolt 4 too, but speed will probably drop due to lower bandwidth. It's okay if you're using your existing laptop, though buying a new one just to be limited would be a waste. From what I see, only certain high-end Arrow Lake models support TB5, which is disappointing. For the eGPU, it would be great if they raised the power limit beyond the suggested 150W to reveal more details about the card.
