Arris moves straight to the switch. Should I really need a new router?

I haven't noticed a requirement to turn on QoS on my network using AT&T gigabit, but if handled correctly, it shouldn't affect performance negatively. Devices not marked for reduced bandwidth should maintain normal throughput.

I’d look for a solution that functions as a hardware firewall. The Arris performs poorly in this role—it fails to block certain packets, leaving most through.

I’d suggest opting for a dedicated enterprise or prosumer firewall. A few reliable options include Fortinet FortiGate, Palo Alto Networks Prisma Access, and Cisco ASA. Let me know if you need more details!

Consider using pfSense for building your network setup or an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter-X for similar purposes.

We configure the ISP router as PASSTHRU. Then link port 1 from the ISP router to your router's WAN port. Connect your switch to a router LAN port. The firewall sits between the WAN and LAN sides of the router. Switching the ISP router/modem to a LAN port and connecting the switch to a router LAN port removes the firewall barrier.

You can configure the nighthawk X6S to act as a router, not just an AP. Avoid setting it solely in AP mode.

Only a single cable connects to it in the closet at the house's center. Can the Edge router work with that setup?
