Hi, a few days back my computer stopped working (I checked the PSU and the power button separately). Since I own an ASUS X570 ROG motherboard, I assumed the CPU was dead, so I sent it back for repair. The RMA confirmed the CPU was fine. A bit of background: about 8 months ago, my PC did the same, and I returned the motherboard (an MSI X570 gaming plus) claiming the board was faulty. That led me to buy a more costly board, which I mentioned earlier, so I won’t face that problem again. My current setup includes: Ryzen 7 3700X, 2x 16GB Kingston HyperX 3600MHz, Seasonic 650W gold semi-modular PSU, and RTX3060. What might be causing my motherboards to fail? P.S. When I said the PC doesn’t power on, I meant literally it stays black. P.S. After removing the PC and trying to boot from the case, out of 10 attempts on the ASUS ROG board, once it turned on I received a CPU error code.
Misunderstood Encounter involving a short circuit on the backboard? Dirty power from the wall outlet...
you might have pushed components beyond their limits and now see the effects immediately, or a component without a temperature monitor became excessively warm and went unnoticed
The electricity from the grid is very clean in my region, and there are no additional fees.
It started up only once during testing with the PC built without a case, otherwise it remained consistent. Yes, I have water cooling (Arctic Freezer 2 240).
*** UPDATED 2:12p EST *** Beyond the clear possibilities discussed... What exactly are you referring to when you say the PC won’t power on and remains dark? My concern stems from a RAM upgrade in my 5900X build that kept causing a video failure every 8-10 restarts. It turned out the RAM wasn’t listed on the board manufacturer’s QVL for that model, and swapping it with a kit approved by the board manufacturer resolved the problem. It seems the first kit I tried was rejected because of instability issues similar to what I faced. Could you clarify what you mean? Might it be that the system powers up but fails to show video? If that’s the case, a RAM issue could be the culprit. ADDED: Regarding supply line voltage problems, a UPS backup might help. Most units can handle voltage fluctuations and some include built-in conditioning to smooth out irregularities. For context, they’re rated in VA and VA doesn’t measure wattage. My 5900X with an RTX3060ti paired with an 850W Corsair draws roughly 450-550W at peak, providing about 9-19 minutes of runtime from a 1000VA APC I acquired. The RAM story from side is quite fascinating to me. I own two identical RAM modules—one before and one after HyperX was purchased. The names and serial numbers differ slightly, but they’re identical in function. Both sticks are about a year old and around five months old, and they performed perfectly. I didn’t notice any instability issues with either version. When I say it stays black, I mean it doesn’t power up at all, except for the USB ports which still work (they charge devices as expected). The relay in the PSU also fails to activate.
