Yesterday I applied the Windows 10 Creators update and now occasionally saw Avast Windows prompting for installation. I hadn’t used Avast on this machine before, so no reminders were installed. This began shortly after the update, which was unusual. I removed it by deleting the associated folder. Note: The system notes that the upgrade tool was created on February 4, 2017, and the folder was updated on April 13. I made sure nothing with Avast was touched, as I always scan for hidden programs trying to install alongside others.

I haven't received any unnecessary software, perhaps you already had it set up.

It seems the update might have included unwanted software before you installed it. I also saw torrent files on your desktop, which are often used for running applications on systems—like when users shared torrents for services such as Bitcoin mining.

I don't use uTorrent at all. The last time I enabled it was a year ago. I'm also familiar with Bitcoin mining, which is why I stick to an older version. I only install qBittorrent and turn it off right after downloading something, and I haven't updated it in over a year, so I'm unsure if it came from there.

The update seems unnecessary since Avast isn't adding anything valuable, just reinforcing their existing Windows Defender.

I recently saw a discussion on Microsoft's forum about users who had Avast installed but later removed it. They still had the software running, and after upgrading, it would suddenly appear again. I found a link to uninstall it here: http://forums.windowscentral.com/windows...alled.html. It seems you probably don’t need to boot in safe mode for this.

Run the uninstaller from your PC then. Revo Uninstaller works well.

Maybe I actually have it installed somewhere but it wasn’t visible until I refreshed. That’s strange too. I already deleted it using Shift+Del. It seems like a good idea to reinstall the OS anyway, because I’m facing two issues that even Microsoft support couldn’t fix... I’m not sure this reinstall will work for both, as my research suggests the problem likely lies with Windows 10 itself.

Install it as instructed, or try a different uninstaller since it's just adware.
