For gaming. Paired with a 3080, mostly MMOs, 1440p/165hz Should I do it? What would you do? Reasoning for: It's fun to play with parts It might be better in MMOs it's only money Reasoning against: Not huge gains It won't be better in all games/scenarios it's money A 12700k/Z690 system would run me around $650; I could sell the 10900KF/Z590 for perhaps $400 and it would cost me the difference. I would not be moving parts down to my family members because the only one who seems to need an upgrade is my daughter but no way she needs a 10900k.

It was always going to happen... Yes, Lt. Warf. Proceed with the upgrade. It makes sense.

if i had the funds, i’d purchase a 12900k with an apex board and DDR5 when it becomes available again. (a drd5-6000 hinix kit would be ideal) a 12700k+ is just the budget-friendly choice that’s delivering solid performance for its cost in games. a cheaper drd4 board is merely the low-end option that’s currently working well for its price. for someone with an 8700k, a 12900k would be a reasonable upgrade if they’re aiming for higher resolutions. with a 10900k, i wouldn’t even think about the 12700k—upgrading would be minor enough not to matter for my gaming needs, especially at 1080p. the case for the 12900k is impressive in terms of productivity boost and letting me reuse my old hardware to set up a second rig for streaming. alternatively, an atem mini pro for 469€ would be a solid alternative.

I’m keeping my current 4000/cl18 DDR4 setup, just swapping it in two parts. I can use a Corsair mounting kit to maintain the same cooler. The main performance boost would come in MMO frame rates at low settings; according to AnandTech’s FFXIV data, 10th gen parts—even with overclocking—still lag behind the Ryzen 5000 series. I’m confident the 12th gen parts will perform even better. Overall, it feels more like a premium upgrade than a necessity unless I want the extra gains.

Hey, it’s a toss-up. DDR5 or not—better invest wisely if you’re budgeting for the holidays. (That’s why I’m holding off on AMD...)

Upgrades occasionally don’t have to make sense. A man’s heart with a reptile brain sometimes needs tweaks to feel happy LOL

It seems like you're questioning why a new lawn mower isn't arriving sooner. The latest models were released in early 2022, so it's likely already available.

Looking at some cool 3D ideas sounds exciting. Just make sure it's DDR5 or I'll stick with Intel. At least I’ll have a clear idea—big cores and many small ones, but not in a 3D layout, which might be a bit disappointing.

I believe those who will reply to this will end up similar to me. You remember what happened a few days back? My 12900k is due at my roommates' place tomorrow, and I expect it on the first day. Will it boost my performance much? Probably not. Do I want new shiny parts? Absolutely! They won’t help until spring arrives.

Recent reports suggest AM4 will be the next generation, replacing existing CPUs. Zen4 is expected to follow with AM5 and DDR5 support.
