You're dealing with an older FX chipset and are considering a newer AMD processor. It's wise to check if a BIOS update is necessary before installing the new CPU. Since you don't have an earlier Ryzen version to boot into, you might want to wait until you have the right setup. It could be better to focus on getting the motherboard ready first and then upgrade later. Thanks for reaching out!

It seems likely it will work. You might have thought about using the FX processor for a BIOS update, but it looks like a BIOS update is needed and should be available soon—so updating now would be best.

The FX processor uses an AM3+ connector, not AM4. I assumed it wouldn't work?

Absolutely understandable, but most boards don’t need BIOS updates either. The minimum BIOS version needed is usually available on many chips, so it’s likely your board is already compatible with the 5000 series.

Updates were necessary for older models when newer ones launched, but not all CPUs would require changes with future releases.

I don’t recall any updates for B450 prior to its release. In the worst case, you might be able to ask AMD for a loaner CPU or check with stores like Best Buy for a BIOS upgrade.

Likely not unless you purchase a board once the resellers replenish stock with the latest bios.

Consider purchasing a board that supports USB flashback for using Ryzen 5000 without installing a 3000 CPU.
