I own an ASUS TUF Gaming B650-E Wi-Fi motherboard. The CPU uses an 8 + 4 pin connector, though the manual mentions the 4 pin is optional. My concern is what the 4 pin serves—does it only apply to high-power CPUs or for overclocking? If I skip it for my Ryzen 7 7800X3D, am I missing out on performance gains?

With the connectors available, simply plug it in.

Generally speaking, though, it’s still not essential since even a 7950X in liquid nitrogen won’t stress a standard 8-pin connector. Feel free to connect it; it won’t damage anything, but there’s no real advantage beyond appearance.

Some believe additional connectors help even out power fluctuations. With the right cables and space available, connecting is perfectly fine, though it isn't strictly necessary.
