No need to play Witcher 1 & 2 for a grasp of Witcher 3. The stories and depth of both games are valuable, and you can enjoy the narrative without prior experience. Regarding time, each game offers a substantial investment—Witcher 1 & 2 typically take weeks to complete, while Witcher 3 is more expansive but also demands significant time.

I directly played 3 without any previous story.

Nope. However, checking the Wiki summaries will greatly assist in understanding both the minor and major aspects of W3.

Honestly, if you go for 1 and 2, skip them. It’s a poor game. A quick summary would be helpful—3 is the best option, though 2 works too. I enjoy 1 and 2, but they feel rough now, especially 1 behaves very differently from 2 and 3.

I didn’t feel up to playing either. I tried two for a while but it felt too rigid: just like a JRPG going straight down a corridor, killing mobs, returning to town, then moving on. Not great. If you’re looking for deep backstory that doesn’t spoil the main game, I’d suggest starting with the Witcher books. I’ve finished the first three and am already working through the fourth.

For a deeper grasp, agree. Or simply read the Books.

I wouldn't watch Return of the Jedi without having seen A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Opinions vary, but many find The Witcher 1 disappointing. My approach was to watch a Let's Play first, then play the game, followed by reading the book details, and finally playing the sequel. Understanding the backstory helps appreciate the characters and setting fully. Witcher 2 stands out as a great title on its own.
