I rely solely on my PC for light tasks and esports games such as CS:GO and CoD Warzone, so I didn’t require a high core count. Instead, I focused on strong clock speeds. A while back I upgraded an i3-9350KF to 5.0GHz and it performed well. It’s reliable and fits nicely with my GTX 1660 Ti. However, with the news about next-gen consoles using 8-core CPUs, I’m a bit concerned about my future setup. Eventually, I plan to upgrade my GPU once RTX becomes more affordable. AMD offers a budget-friendly option with RT. Before that, if Intel releases one, I’d consider an i3-10350KF as a solid upgrade. I’d also like to boost its speed to 5.0GHz, giving me double the threads for better performance over time. That would be great, right? I understand the Ryzen 3 3300X exists, but I prefer the highest possible performance and room for future tuning. I’m not too concerned about PCIe 4.0 right now. What do you all think? Anyone else really excited about an unlocked 10th Gen Core i3 quad-core with SMT? Likely around a base clock of 4.0GHz?
I’m not interested in those models since they haven’t been announced yet. I doubt they’ll come out soon either. My needs are very specific—I’m after quad-core performance records. That leaves me with older Intel options, and the newer Zen 2 chips don’t reach the required speeds even with their IPC benefits.
I favor the multi-threaded approach. If enough people purchase the lower core speed with higher thread count, software development will catch up soon enough, making these threads practical. At least that’s my hope. It’s simpler to have more threads than higher core speed. Unless a major breakthrough occurs, I don’t think we’ll exceed 5GHz... But there could be an increase in instructions per clock and similar improvements.
Really? That's quite disappointing. I'm curious if the 3300X can overclock high. If it can, I'll choose one with a B550 itx instead. Fingers crossed they arrive in Japan soon. Sometimes it takes a month or two longer than in North America.
If an "i3-10350KF" existed, it would add four extra threads compared to your setup (same core count), though performance gains per core might not be significant. Since you'd need to replace the motherboard, it could be a pricey or even unnecessary upgrade. Until the actual chip is available, it remains speculative.
Observe the effect similarly, yet for smoother gameplay at higher resolutions, strong core clocks are essential. I’m cautiously hoping this will improve.
You could always purchase a 6700k/7700k if you wish to regret your choices and need quick cores for batches of just four, or even 7740x from enthusiasts who are tired of overclocking (or simple fools who believed quad-core on X299 would be the next step). The 3100 appears to offer the strongest single core performance, surpassing 3300x in early reports where overclocking pushed it to 4.5-4.6GHz—something Ryzen 5s 7s and 9s can't match. However, when cores are split across different CCXs (unlike the 3300x with all cores in one CCX), its performance drops significantly compared to the 3300x.
