Hey everyone, I've been exploring various setup options for my next computer project. One concept that keeps coming up is PCI Passthrough. Initially, I considered a desktop build with two physical SSDs—one for Linux and one for Windows. But after updating to Windows and only using Discord, graphics drivers, and games, I realized it’s not necessary to keep a dedicated Windows drive. Now I’m leaning toward running a VM for the games I still need Windows for, while using an i5/i7 with integrated graphics. This way, I can switch between Linux for simplicity and Windows on demand. If you have experience with GPU passthrough, how would you rate the impact on gameplay performance? Is there a clear increase in input lag when using a virtual machine?
Ugh, no one replied... I’ve tried to figure it out myself. I’m thinking about using a Linux distro for everyday tasks and a Windows VM with GPU support for gaming. I don’t recall finding a detailed guide, but I’m curious how it turned out. Did it function properly?
I haven’t tried the dive yet, and I’m not really planning to. The idea I mentioned earlier about switching to a laptop-only setup feels too bold. My current goal is to create an affordable “Esports machine” around $800 or less—just Windows for gaming and a Linux setup like Fedora Workstation for everyday tasks. I’ve been tracking different options and their costs in a spreadsheet, which seems to point toward the most sensible choice.
