I don’t see the point in needing a CPU upgrade… or even overclocking a brand new Skylake past version 4.3… I’d just switch to a new case, and if you’re aiming for higher FPS, your GPU is likely the real bottleneck now. Maybe a second 970 in SLI could help?...
So far, I haven’t noticed any need for more FPS. After overclocking, all my games are now running well above triple digits at max settings in 1080p, which is really satisfying!
The only concern I have is that the temperatures these components are reaching are a bit higher than I’d prefer. That’s why I’m considering water cooling. I’m hoping for better temperatures and a quieter build overall, which means I’ll need to install a 4-pin PWM fan controller for all my case fans—they’re all running at full speed on the power supply connectors right now.
In the future, I might try SLI-ing a 970, but it seems more practical to save up for a better card. Some games aren’t scaling properly, and others have micro-stuttering issues. This isn’t something I should bring up yet unless I’m better prepared with more details and clearer problems. Even though an upgrade feels distant right now, I’d rather not rush it.
I’d also prefer not to upgrade the CPU, so I’m glad it’s not necessary. But when it was running at stock speeds of 2.7GHZ and 3.3 turbo, it was limiting the GPU, and Call of Duty had serious issues, which I attributed to problems with the i5 chips.
I’ll create a new thread if my searches don’t yield results for a suitable case that can accommodate all the water cooling components. I’m still trying to find the best value, as I might move the PC under the desk now that my setup is almost finished—so it should become less of an issue. Also, after researching water cooling more, it doesn’t seem as overwhelming as it was before; custom solutions look promising. With the electronics and plumbing I’ve assembled, I think water cooling (including fish tank plumbing and general knowledge) should work without major problems.
That’s my plan, and hopefully I can get under 300CAD for both CPU and GPU cooling. Not sure if it’s feasible or looks good aesthetically, but that’s what I’m aiming for!
Thanks for your thoughts—I’ll be back.
