It's unusual. My brother also has a distinct method of using WASD. He keeps his thumb on space but only uses his index finger for WASD. I don't know what he does with the other fingers, but he doesn't use them for WASD. In games like GTA, he makes sure the car controls are on arrow keys and he drives with his right hand. I think he hasn't learned to use all his left-hand fingers effectively, and that won't help him improve. Still, he enjoys games and who am I to judge. If you want to master WASD like others, try practicing in Quake live mode to get comfortable.
