I purchased an ordinary Ethernet cable to connect to my dorm's router without verifying the port first. That was a big oversight. Who can identify this port? Does it function in the same way as Ethernet?

This port doesn't support the same features as an Ethernet port. The RJ11 male to female cord won't function properly.

That's a Console port on an AP, it is not ethernet and is for accessing the CLI of the AP directly That AP is most likely powered by PoE so just getting a switch will not work either since you'll end up on the wireless VLAN most likely which will be configured differently (IE what you're allowed to access) than a standard student data VLAN. Either get a switch and plug it into a data port on the wall, or deal with wireless.

Alter settings, don't change the hub!

Absolutely avoid purchasing a hub if possible—opt for a switch instead.

You're asking about the importance of hubs and why sharing data with all connected devices is valuable.

It seems you're thinking about something similar to a Wi-Fi router—perfect, you want one!
