I only became aware of this when my browser showed an error about updated DNS servers. A NordVPN service was already active. What’s the purpose behind this change? And is it necessary? It seemed to be done without my permission.

It might be connected to the kill-switch feature that halts all network activity when the VPN disconnects abruptly.

They require you to rely on a non-logging DNS service. The key benefit of a VPN is protecting your privacy. However, using your regular ISP DNS can still expose your queries. Even with a different public IP through the VPN, your internet provider might match it to a connection initiated by a NordVPN server and use that IP for DNS requests. Hope this clarifies. Martin
