It's similar to going to McDonald's and playing it—they'd assign a different IP. I've used a VPN before to prevent cheaters, and I don't see the point in banning accounts for that reason. It seems they're more focused on IP than using a VPN to bypass restrictions.

They likely understand the area where your game was set up and will enforce consequences for that. However, not for participating in online play with just one person.

It's generally not ideal to use a vpn with games, as the ping times will suffer, but I see no reason as to why you would get banned for it. It isn't a game side mod, so they have no way of knowing
