Just got a 6950xt, thought about moving to a 7900x soon, but unsure if my 5800x is holding me back right now. Not too familiar with tech specs, sorry for the confusion!

It might cause some delays, but there will always be a point where a slow part appears. It won’t be serious enough to cause concern, particularly at 2k. You should be okay! If you intend to move to a 7900x next year and already own the 6950x, just keep running on the existing setup—unless you decide to upgrade.

She was considering if an interim upgrade to 5900x was the right move… My wife wanted me to skip it.

For gaming you wouldn't see much gain if any from a 5800x to a 5900x, They are so close to eachother it wouldn't matter at 2k resolution. Dont upgrade.

The 7900 offers only minor improvements over the 5800x in terms of gaming performance, as the 6950xt still performs well.

I switched to a 6950XT on my 5900X about six months ago and half a month back I upgraded to a 5800X3D. I have some thoughts to share. The 5900X doesn’t outperform the 5800X for gaming. The 5800X offers eight cores in the same CCX, while the 5900X has two CCXs with six cores each. It feels like the 5900X is just two 5600X units combined. Because the communication between those core groups is slow, a game that needs eight cores will actually perform better on the 5800X. The standard 5800X should handle most games smoothly at 1440p. A 5800X3D could be worth considering if you want smoother frame rates, like in competitive shooters.
