Right now: GTX 1070ti boosted Ryzen 5 3600x stock MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon WI-FI 32gb 3600mhz CL 16 (2*16) 32" 1440p 75hz monitor. Upgrade: Ryzen 5 5600x overclocked ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WI-FI. Will the new CPU improve performance and keep up with my setup through 2021 on this screen? Games: Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 4, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cities Skylines, Crisis 3 Remastered. Do I need to upgrade my GPU (3080)? I can afford it but won’t if it’s not essential. Ray Tracing isn’t a major concern since only Cyberpunk excites me there, and my 3080 pre-order price feels like a £750 overpayment for what I consider a poorly designed PNY card. Thanks.
For 1440p at 75fps, the 3600 should perform adequately for your needs. Are you not happy with gaming speed? I suggest upgrading your GPU first, then the CPU later. Board partners are launching support for B450 and 5000 models, so it’s a good idea to stick with your existing motherboard.
3600x can easily last much longer than 2021 unless you run CPU-heavy multitasking games. Its performance per thread matches Intel’s Skylake 14nm processors. Budget usually goes toward the graphics card first. With your 1070ti (probably from a friend), it makes sense to hold off and watch how Nvidia reacts to AMD’s upcoming Navi GPUs. If a refresh happens, it should appear sometime in 2021.
