Hello, just a brief inquiry about Ethernet. I’ve used Wi-Fi all my life, but after learning about the advantages of Ethernet, I’m eager to test it on my newly built PC. Wi-Fi was decent but not ideal. My setup currently shows 400 down 25 up, with around 350 down and 22 up. I purchased a 1GBPS Ethernet cable and connected it to slot #1 on my Xfinity router/modem, then to the Ethernet port in my computer. The interface displays "Unidentified Network" and "no internet." After some research, I found instructions about resetting via CMD commands like ipconfig /release and ipconfig renew. However, whenever I ran those commands, I encountered an error: "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 1 while it has its media disconnected." I’ve tried running the commands as administrator, updated my Ethernet drivers, but nothing seems to work. What should I do next?
Did you verify you had a bi-directional Ethernet connection? Some cables only work one direction, so try flipping it to test. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist after a long day.) The software seems to be the most likely cause. Fingers crossed you resolve this soon—your current Wi-Fi speeds are impressive, though your cable connection is around 85 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up in Northern California, Humboldt County.
This involves the Windows Firewall settings. You need to specify whether your connection is at home, work, or public network. I’ll try restarting the computer first. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the network card drivers. This usually fixes the issue. Also, ensure WiFi is turned off, as it might be mistakenly enabled.
I tried everything but it didn't help. Just kept repeating the same steps. Sorry to hear it didn't work.
Is there a broken cable or a faulty Ethernet port? Have you tested other ports on the router?
