I assembled the PC using parts I already had. The CPU is an i5 4690 with an old Pure Rock Slim cooler and MX4 paste. I ran IBT and it reached 100°C several times. After removing the cooler, I reinserted it. Now I see AIDA64 idle at 30 max 71, and IBT idle at 30 max 93. I recall certain stress tests can cause extreme heat. It seems my i3-4170 might have overheated in a previous Prime95 version. Is this the same issue? Or is it just a "hot chip" problem? Cheers.
IBT stands out as a top-tier stress test, surpassing even Prime95 Small FFTs in terms of difficulty. It performs well without negatively impacting the hardware.
I recently applied a fresh thermal paste multiple times while using it regularly, so I don’t need to worry about a strict 'curing' time for newer formulas. The Haswell i5s aren’t particularly sensitive to heat. I’ve used a 4790k at normal speeds with a downdraft cooler for years—even running 3D renders nonstop for over 30 hours—and never faced any problems with that compact cooler on the chip.
