Hello, I purchased a Ryzen 5 5600G on an Asrock B550M Pro4 motherboard for NAS use. After installing the POST, it fails to exceed VGA resolution. I’m unsure if the CPU is the issue or if I need to update the BIOS with another chip. Thanks.

That's an older board. My money's on BIOS. Check AsRock's site for that board to be sure.

It's very probable the BIOS you checked is outdated; the CPU list indicates compatibility only after the P1.80 BIOS upgrade, meaning an older BIOS won't function properly.

The available options don't specify which BIOS supports the 5000g series. Flashing BIOS usually requires an APU or a CPU with a GPU, and none of these are mentioned here.

No one familiar with me has seen this. Many nearby PC shops used to provide free or low-cost BIOS updates. It seems AMD had a program where they sent you a chip for updating and then you returned it, though I’m not sure if that’s still available. Refer to the link for details—AMD is still offering a chip here.

You need a boot kit, it should be around 3000g or 200ge, and the BIOS should flash with it. Please return it.

Sorry, the 3000G and 200GE models don't work together. The latest upgrade seems to require a Ryzen 3 3100 or similar. You might need to reach out to AMD to confirm if the CPU update is still offered (they usually ask for proof of purchase). If you don’t have a Ryzen 3000 series CPU, you could look at your friend’s machine instead.

You might want to look at the production date of your mobo first. If it’s past March 5, 2021, it’s very likely it already supports the 5000-series. There’s usually a label near the CPU socket showing the installed BIOS version—check that. If not, you’ll need to upgrade the BIOS by using a temporary CPU.

Keeping the CPU would likely be a big advantage!

The update process along with missing BIOS restart options left AMD facing some challenges this year.
